Portugal has allowed the use of U.S. aircraft at the Lajes air base in the Azores, on condition they are not used to target civilian infrastructure. Portugal's Foreign Minister, Paulo Rangel, stated that the U.K. had complied with the condition, but several occasions have been rejected. The base is a strategic hub for the U.,S. Air Force and hosts the 65th Air Base ​Wing of the US.
