Disney-owned ABC TV stations are facing an early license renewal as part of the Federal Communications Commission's investigation into Disney's DEI practices, according to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr. This follows a controversy surrounding ABC's Jimmy Kimmel's comment that First Lady Melania Trump had the look of an "expectant widow". The president and first lady have called for ABC to fire Kimmel. The FCC has also ordered eight ABC stations owned by Disney, ABC's parent company, to undergo a license renewal, despite the stations' license being due to expire until 2028. Carr stated that the action was driven by the investigation into DEI conduct, not speech, but by delaying providing DEI-related documents to the FCC. Disney responded by saying it had a long record of operating in compliance with FCC rules and is prepared to demonstrate its position under the Communications Act and the First Amendment.
