A Multnomah County judge has ruled in favor of the supporters of an initiative petition seeking to divert a portion of the city's clean energy fund (PCEF) to police. The initiative, which is backed by Portland’s police union, would use 25 percent of PCEF’ earnings for hiring more police officers. However, a coalition of climate and social justice advocates filed a challenge against the initiative, claiming it was not legally sound enough to qualify for the ballot. However this decision was largely welcomed by both sides, with both claiming victory over the court decision. The petitioners must now submit a corrected petition to resolve their original paperwork issue, which could pose a significant challenge for them.
