The number of tailors, dressmakers and custom sewing specialists in the U.S. is decreasing, but increasing demand is increasing as younger people seek alterations and more affordable clothing. The rise of weight-loss medications has led to more people seeking alterations as their bodies change, and the number of skilled workers is decreasing. The Fashion Institute of Technology has partnered with Walmart to create a training program aimed at addressing this shortage.
