Pontiac's identical engine block dimensions allowed flexibility in engine development, allowing manufacturers and engine builders to select which displacement and output would best suit their needs. The Pontiac V8, introduced in 1955 as the 287 cubic-inch Strato-Streak, produced 303 horsepower in high-compression trim, but the same physical size as the Strato'-Streak allowed Pontiac to swap these engines into smaller cars. The engine's modular construction improved reliability and likely service turnover. The V8's influence also extended beyond engine builders, with the original Pontiac GTO bringing the idea of "cheap, little car with a huge engine" into public consciousness.
