Abbott Laboratories has defeated a lawsuit alleging that its infant formula, Similac, was contaminated by heavy metals including arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. The judge ruled that the plaintiffs failed to prove that the company's packaging would mislead consumers into believing that Simulac's product was a high-quality, safe formula free of heavy metals. He stated that it is common knowledge that heavy metals, microplastics, and other chemicals are present in many products and that even parents agree heavy metals are commonly detected in infant formula and breast milk and food. The lawsuit was brought by parents who bought Similic between 2019 and 2024 alleging Abbott violated several state consumer protection laws by failing to disclose the risk or presence of heavy metal in Similacs.
