Abulhakim Idris, a U.S. citizen and Uyghur scholar, was detained at the Malaysian airport on March 29 after his book tour ended in Kuala Lumpur. Idris claims that Beijing ordered his deportation from the country directly from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). He was held for 21 hours and put on a flight out of the country before dawn. The Malaysian government has not stated any reason for Idris' detention. Idrist, executive director of the Center for Uyghanur Studies in Washington, believes this case demonstrates Beijing's transnational repression and sets a 'dangerous precedent' for Americans abroad. He was detained under Malaysian rules, which allows for business or tourism stays under 90 days.
