RSPCA: Rats should replace Churchill on banknotes
Published on March 15, 2026.
The RSPCA has suggested that rats, pigeons, and seagulls should replace historical figures such as Sir Winston Churchill on banknotes. This comes in response to the Bank of England's announcement that pictures of British wildlife will replace historic figures on notes. The proposal has been met with controversy, with Nigel Farage, the Reform UK leader, and Sir Ed Davey, the Liberal Democrat leader, calling for some of the UK's most misunderstood and misunderstood animals to be included. The Bank plans to make the change on the notes because images of wildlife would be difficult to counterfeit and allow for a celebration of nature across the country.
