The most conservative province in Canada, Alberta, is considering a bill to prevent federal laws from expanding to the mentally ill. The "Safeguards for Last Resort Termination of Life Act" was introduced last month and aims to set out Alberta's regulatory framework for MAID and address gaps in the federal system where there is a lack of protection for vulnerable individuals. The bill would limit MAID eligibility in Alberta to individuals 18 and over with capacity to make their own health care decisions whose natural death has been deemed reasonably foreseeable. It would also ban MAID for anyone under 18 years old, advance requests, those without the ability to make health decisions, and individuals with a mental illness. This comes as assisted suicide levels reach a disturbing level in Canada. There have been 76,000 Canadians killed through assisted suicide from its first year through 2024.
