A metal detectorist in England discovered a silver and gold ring over 1,000 years old and inscribed with runic characters. The 4.51-gram silver ring was discovered by Boston resident Rafal Wesolowski in a field in Quadring, England. University and museum experts have confirmed that the ring dates to between 700 and 1000 C.E. They believe the engraving indicates the ring belonged to an individual named Udnan and its materials and design suggest it was owned by a high-status individual. The ring joins a small group of inscribed early medieval rings known to exist in Britain. Since it is made of more than 10 percent metals and is over 300 years old, it qualifies as a precious ring under The Act 1996.
