President Trump has fired Attorney General Pam Bondi due to increasing frustration over her leadership. Bondi had faced scrutiny for her handling of the Epstein files and other high-profile failures in failing to mount cases against perceived enemies of the president. It is unclear who will take over as acting DOJ head, with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche expected to take over if he is replaced. Blanche defended Trump in three criminal cases as his personal attorney before being tapped for the No. 2 spot at DOJ. Other potential candidates for permanently succeeding Bondi include Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin.
