Long-term mayoral control puts children first

Former city schools chancellor, Michael Walton, argues that long-term mayoral control over the education of children in New York City should be extended to four years, allowing parents, families and communities to hold one person accountable for the success of our students. This comes after New York State moved away from a fragmented model that left students largely under the influence of individual fiefdoms and allowed corruption to occur. Walton argues that the current system is not perfect, but Mayor Bloomberg has made clear his intention to ensure genuine community involvement in schooling and outcomes. He argues that working with the mayor to ensure the school system is working to its full potential can't be achieved.
