Mario Pena, a former Waukegan resident, is being honored for his volunteer efforts to help immigrants become citizens and registered voters. He arrived from Mexico in 1971 and worked full-time for Abbott Laboratories before becoming a citizen. Once he was a citizen, Pena began helping other immigrants obtain citizenship through relationships at churches and other places. He also co-founded HACES with Maria Elana Jonas and served two terms as a Waukgan trustee. Despite his efforts, many believe he has a calling to serve his people and voters. Pena will be recognized at a Fiestas Patrias event at 4 p.m.
