Sentencing closes chapter in deadly West Portal crash

Mary Fong Lau, the 80-year-old driver responsible for killing a family of four at a bus stop in West Portal two years ago, has been sentenced to two years probation, 200 hours of community service and six days in jail. Despite a petition with over 13,000 signatures calling for a harsher sentence, San Francisco Superior Court judge Bruce Chan instead ordered her to pay $67,400 in restitution and permanently revoke her driver's license. The tragedy sparked ongoing concerns over street safety, speeding, and enforcement.
