The US State Department has agreed to stop the department from supporting technology that suppresses or fact-checks Americans' speech, settling a lawsuit by conservatives who claimed the department funded tools that censored conservative media outlets during the Biden era. The lawsuit alleges that the department violated free speech protections of the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment by funding tools used by social media companies to "deplatform" and render unprofitable "disfavored" news outlets. The department will also be barred from working with foreign governments or non-governmental entities for those purposes through 2036. The agreement requires judge's approval.
