OpenAI, a subsidiary of Sam Altman, announced that ChatGPT would allow verified adults to access erotica in an adult mode in October 2025, as part of a principle of treating adults like adults. However, the company has since delayed the launch of the adult mode several times and stated it needed to focus on other features such as intelligence improvements, personality, and making the chatbot more proactive. Critics have raised concerns about minors circumventing age gates, jailbreaks spreading explicit content beyond its intended walls, regulatory gaps that leave written eroticas in a legal grey zone. However these concerns are legitimate, but the harder question is what happens to the adults who are allowed in. OpenAI lost $5 billion in 2024 on revenue of $3.7 billion and its losses could reach $143 billion before it turns a profit. A study found that adults who developed emotional connections with AI chatbots were significantly more likely to experience elevated psychological distress than those who did not. The company's business model is also based on emotional attachment, a phenomenon researchers are calling ‘AI psychosis’ linked to intense chatbot relationships.
