NASA plans to start a fire on the Moon in the first-of-its-kind experiment, the Flammability of Materials on the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference (FM2), in late 2026. The mission will launch four solid fuel samples and record flame characteristics under lunar gravity for an extended period of time. The tests are part of a larger effort to understand how Lunar gravity will affect material flammability. If FM2 launches as planned, it could make a safer trip for Artemis crews and lead to a deeper understanding of physics in outer space. The report on FM2 suggests that "lunar gravity could be more hazardous since flame spread rate is a function of gravity peaks" in certain partial gravity environments.
