State Rep. Margaret Croke, D-Chicago, held a 24,000-vote lead over state Sen. Karina Villa in the Democratic race for Illinois Comptroller, with 83 percent of votes reporting as of 10 p.m. The Associated Press had not yet called the race. Croke has served in the Illinois General Assembly since 2021 and is a close ally to Gov. JB Pritzker, who endorsed her candidacy in February. She plans to enforce the Prevailing Wage Act, which requires state contractors to demonstrate they are not underpaying their workers on public works projects, and allocate more resources to the Comptroller’s Provenailing Wage Office and work with the Department of Labor to ensure thorough and timely investigations. If the results hold, Croke would face Bryan Drew, a southern Illinois attorney, in the general election. Villa's main focus is raising revenue for the state and trying to pass a graduated income tax.
