The state-owned Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority (AIDEA), which is leading some of the most contentious development projects in the state, has approved a $700,000 PR budget to address its need to better tell its own story. The agency, run by former Gov. Mike Dunleavy's former chief of staff, stated that the new budget will ensure proper public engagement, transparency, and stewardship of the authority's mission. The money could be used for trade shows and conferences, responding to media inquiries, and other communications-related needs. Critics have criticized the agency for not adequately promoting its efforts in traditional finance areas, particularly in loan programs that have helped finance tourism and hospitality businesses. The budget is a limit, and the agency will set a final budget through a request for proposals process.
