Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has announced it will sell high-temperature superconducting magnets to Realta Fusion, marking the second in a series of deals that suggest the company will rely heavily on its magnet technology in the future. This deal is the largest deal of this kind to date for CFS, according to Rick Needham, the company’s COO. CFS has previously sold magnets to the WHAM experiment at the University of Wisconsin, where Reauta collaborates closely with, and these magnets are less powerful and therefore cheaper. The company is pursuing another form of magnetic confinement fusion called a tokamak, where D-shaped magnets create powerful fields to keep plasma circulating in a doughnut-like shape inside.
