Indian citizen Subramanyam Vedam, known as Subu, may be freed after his murder conviction was overturned in Pennsylvania after four decades in prison. The U.S. government wants to send Vedam back to India, despite leaving the country as a baby in 1962. A judge ruled that Vedam has changed and is not a danger to society due to his work helping other inmates learn to read and family connections. However, Vedam could still be deported due to past drug convictions. The government has one month to appeal the decision. Vedam plans to live with family in California and has been offered admission to a doctoral program in Oregon.
