The Goshen Canyon Fire in Utah County may have been sparked by target shooting, according to a preliminary report from the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands investigator Karl Hunt. Dave Larsen, manager of Doug's Shoot'n Sports in Taylorsville, said that the type of bullet can affect the spark potential. Larsen also recommended the use of appropriate lead core ammo and a fire extinguisher for target shooting. The Utah County Sheriff's Office said it's legal for people to target shoot on state lands but relies on the public to alert them if something appears amiss. The county is working with the Division of Agriculture investigator to pursue people of interest in the fire.
