Richmond is investing $100,000 to help businesses install security cameras that connect to police systems in 13 eligible neighborhoods. The funding is part of the city's response to a mass shooting in Shockoe, but comes amid concerns about Richmond's use of surveillance tools. The full award amount could support about 12 to 15 businesses. However, the typical grant will likely be smaller, allowing the city to serve more businesses. Early interest has been noted from businesses in the affected areas, with the strongest being from Chamberlayne Avenue, Broad Street and Shockoe. Funding will be distributed on a rolling basis until the funding runs out.
