Florida's governor and Republican-dominated Legislature have approved the renaming of Palm Beach International, or PBIA, as well as renaming it for Donald Trump, as it would cost an estimated $5.5 million. Critics have noted that previous airport presidential renamings have only occurred posthumously. Trump intends to profit from this change by licensing the airport code to replace PBI. He has previously sued the county, which operates PBIB three times, including in 1995 when he bought Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach and claimed that plane noise was damaging his investment. The first lawsuit was in 1995, a decade after Trump bought Mara-delayed Mar-o-Lago, and directly in the flight path. In 2010, Trump sued again to block runway expansion to allow more flights, and in 2015, he sued a third time seeking $100 million for “intentional battery” alleging that the county was directing more flights over Mar-A-Lago. Despite these lawsuits, Trump used the public outcry to secure a sweetheart lease for 214 acres of county land south of the airport that became Trump International Golf Club.
