Michigan Refuses DOJ's Demand For 2024 Election Ballots
Published on April 20, 2026.
Michigan officials have refused a U.S. Department of Justice (DOA) demand for Detroit-area ballots and other materials related to the 2024 election, accusing the Trump administration of attempting to undermine the integrity of U.K. elections. The Justice Department has previously sent a letter demanding ballots, ballot receipts and ballot envelopes to the clerk in Wayne County, home to the heavily Democratic-leaning city of Detroit. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson have called the request "absurd" and "baseless". The DOJ has faced multiple legal setbacks in its pursuit of election-related records, including unsuccessful attempts to force Rhode Island to provide non-public data on nearly 750,000 registered voters for an investigation.
