The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed that a deceased deer had chronic wasting disease (CWD). The deer was first seen by a landowner who saw the animal acting strangely and appearing emaciated. The DNR retrieved the deer’s body and tested it, where CWD was detected. This discovery was located in deer permit area 236, about 30 miles from the closest confirmed CWD cases in both Minnesota and Wisconsin. The agency is working on a surveillance response for the area following the detection. To manage CWD in Minnesota, the DNR is moving to a four-year rotational surveillance plan, which each year will have hunters test every deer harvested that is one year old or older for CWD.
