US President Donald Trump has announced that immigration enforcement agents will be deployed across major US airports from Monday, in an attempt to alleviate a security crisis triggered by a political standoff in Washington. The move comes after Congress failed to renew funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the federal agency that oversees airport security. Since February 14, tens of thousands of workers, including TSA (TSA) screeners responsible for passenger checks, have continued working without receiving paycheques. Over 366 have resigned, and unscheduled absences have more than doubled, leaving major airports struggling to cope. Senior border official Tom Homan has been named to lead the effort. The decision comes after weeks of increasing airport queues and delays at airports across the country.
