Young Dad Missing for 5 Days After Being Swept Away by 'Extremely Powerful' Currents While Fishing with Family

A young father is missing after being swept away from a fishing pier in New Zealand on Sunday, April 19. The man was trying to retrieve fishing gear on Shelly Beach Wharf on the North Island when strong currents pulled him away into the Kaipara Harbour. His family was unable to rescue him, and emergency services were called and the police and coastguard began searching. The search for the missing man is ongoing, with the Royal New Zealand Navy's hydrographic team assisting. A temporary Māori restriction was placed over the area from Monday, April 20 to Thursday, April 23 as a mark of respect.
