A study by the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), a group that advocates for lower immigration levels, has found that nearly half of households headed by non-citizen benefit from some form of government welfare. The study also found that when including other forms of welfare, such as eligibility for certain tax credits, this figure rises to over 50%. The study examined welfare use among non-citizens by country and region of birth using data from the Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement. The findings suggest significant variation in county of origin and a major contributor to welfare use is based on educational attainment, not an unwillingness to work. Non-citizens most likely to use traditional welfare include Afghanistan, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, and Korea. This study follows an increased crackdown on illegal immigration and welfare use by otherwise legal foreigners.
