Cuyahoga County, Ohio, became the first county in Ohio to ban conversion therapy last year, following a Supreme Court ruling that it likely violates the First Amendment due to its restriction on speech based on viewpoint. The court sent the case back to lower courts, where it is expected to be struck down. If successful, this could implications for similar laws across the country, particularly where laws regulate counseling or other speech-based practices. The county's ban prohibits practices aimed at changing a person's sexual orientation or gender identity, including extreme physical methods such as electric shock, food deprivation and chemically induced nausea. The law also covers contractors who do business with the county. However, the Supreme Court's decision does not automatically invalidate Cuyahog County's conversion therapy ban.
