AI for seniors class in Goodyear draws questions on uses, risks

The Optum Community Center in Goodyear, Arizona, organised a class called AI for Seniors to address the uses and risks of artificial intelligence. Allen Gordon, a manager at Optum Communities, led the session, describing AI as a computer that can learn or solve problems like humans. Examples included facial recognition on smartphones, music recommendations, and voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa. Gordon emphasized that AI is not a replacement for human judgment and that it is meant to augment existing tasks. He also warned against relying on an AI chatbot for a medical diagnosis. The class also highlighted the potential for hallucinations, which can occur when an AI generates false information and presents it as fact.
