At Least 100 Children Dead in ‘Alarming’ Measles Outbreak

The ongoing measles outbreak in Bangladesh has killed over 100 children in less than a month, with over 900 cases confirmed since March. The Government of Bangladesh partnered with UNICEF, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance to launch an emergency measles-rubella vaccination campaign to protect over 1.2 million children who remain unvaccinated and at risk of contracting the disease. The campaign will initially focus on immunizations for children between six months and five years old in high-risk districts before expanding across the country. The health minister, Sardar Mohammed Sakhawat Husain, attributed the outbreak to the mismanagement of previous governments and failure to properly manage vaccine stockpiles.
