State lawmakers in Tennessee have proposed a bill requiring warning labels for adult-oriented businesses that could indicate an increase in domestic assault, rape, or sexual assault, and human trafficking. The signs would read: "By engaging in this type of entertainment, you may be contributing to increased domestic assaults, rape or sexual assaults. The bill has already been approved by the state Senate and awaits approval in the House. State Sen. Janice Bowling (R-Tullahoma) claimed that a 2021 study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that exposure to pornography positively associated with sexual aggression and that at least 700,000 people, primarily women and children, are trafficked annually, with at least 50,000 in the U.S. She also cited global figures from a Texas group called Unbound Now. However, another study found a clear and solid link between pornography and aggressive sexual behavior, which Bowling claims is not substantiated. If approved, these signs will be displayed prominently, and if signed by the governor, these businesses will not be able to operate from these boards unless they post these signs prominently.
