Health officials caution public about leptospirosis risk after flooding

The state Department of Health and the Hawaiian Humane Society have issued a warning to the public about the potential risk of leptospirosis following recent flooding. The disease is spread through the urine of infected animals and can enter the body through broken skin or through the mouth, nose or eyes. Officials have urged storm victims and recovery workers to monitor for signs of the disease. Officials also noted that Hawaii already has among the highest rates of this disease due to its warm, wet climate.
