The arrest of Venezuelan immigrant Jose Medina for the killing of Loyola University student Sheridan Gorman has sparked debate over sanctuary policies in Chicago and Illinois. The Department of Homeland Security identified Medina as Medina, who entered the US in May 2023 and was arrested for shoplifting the following month. Federal officials have issued an immigration detainer and urged Illinois officials not to release him. However, Cook County prosecutors typically seek detention in all first-degree murder cases under a 2024 policy, which prohibits local law enforcement from holding someone solely on an immigration detainainer. Gorman's family expressed disappointment at the policies and failures allowed this individual to remain in a position to commit the crime. Meanwhile, Mayor JB Pritzker's office has defended the case against politicizing it.
