Americans May Finally Get Customer Service They Don’t Need Translated

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is moving to onshore U.S. call center jobs and implement English proficiency requirements for call takers. The FCC is seeking comment on proposals that would incentivize companies to bring call centers back to the US and improve customer service at existing call centers. The agency is also exploring new methods to financially deter illegal robocalls originating overseas. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr stated that American consumers deserve call centers that speak proficient English and provide clear answers, and are based here at home. Nearly 7 in 10 American companies outsource at least one department in order to offshore call centers, and the US is projected to lose an estimated 150,000 call center positions by 2033.
