Mexican labor leader Alejandro Martínez Araiza, National General Secretary of Sindicato Nacional Alimenticio y del Comercio (SNAC), has argued that the next step in an America First trade agenda is to strengthen Mexico, rather than weaken it. He argues that trade should serve American workers, not multinational corporations, rather rather than multinational corporations. This aligns with the strategic objectives of the Trump administration, which is reviewing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Martíez Araiz argues that North America will never outcompete China if Mexico remains economically weak. He also argues that stronger Mexican wages can strengthen demand while reducing forced migration. He suggests that a prosperous Mexico does not necessarily mean fewer American jobs, but a stronger regional manufacturing base capable of competing with Beijing instead of depending on it.
