Time marches on, whether we’re ready or not

Chris Hardie, former newspaper editor and publisher in Wisconsin, has written about the arbitrary nature of Daylight Saving Time and the impact of this rule on people's sleep and physical rhythms. He criticizes the decision to change the clock, stating that it feels like an hour of my life has been arbitrarily changed by a political rule. Studies have shown that time changes can also affect people's rhythms, including that of heart attacks and the death rate of ischemic stroke due to the disruption of the body’s natural rhythm. Hardie recently had a sleep study where he was hooked up with wires and a breathing measurement apparatus, which revealed a complete absence of N3 sleep, which is the deep, restorative slow-wave sleep during which the brain is cleared of toxins and harmful substances. The author also notes that the recent passing of his mother sparked many emotions, thoughts, and reflects on his own life.
