Dr. Roach has been unable to cure a stubborn case of jock itch for two years, despite using various over-the-counter ointments, powders, and antifungal and antibacterial soaps. His dermatologist prescribed econazole nitrate cream 1%, but it did not completely eliminate the problem. He recommends a scraping and culture of the infected area to confirm the diagnosis. If it is Trichophytin rubram, which is the usual cause of jog itch, oral antififungals such as terbinafine can often be effective treatments. However, keeping the area dry (with dessicant powders such as corn starch) and avoiding tight-fitting clothing can improve this. The most common cause of neuropathy is diabetes, usually found in people who have had diabetes for many years, but not well-controlled, and it may take months of slowly increasing the dose to fully cure it.
