Researchers at the UNLV mosquito lab have begun trapping and studying mosquitoes early this year due to mild winter temperatures bringing mosquito season ahead of schedule. The early start could signal a record-breaking year for mosquito activity and a greater risk for West Nile virus transmission across southern Nevada. The lab is studying wild culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes collected in Green Valley that can carry the virus. Last year, there were no reported West Nile human cases in the area, but in 2024, there will be 26 cases. The team surveyed 1,400 valley residents about pesticide resistance and 84 percent have been bitten in the past year.
