A review of past studies has found that cannabis-based medicines have shown little effectiveness for treating most mental health and substance-use disorders. The study involved 54 randomized clinical trials conducted between 1980 and 2025 involving 2,477 participants. The review found no significant benefit for several conditions such as anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, PTSD and opioid-use disorder. The researchers also found that a combination of cannabidiol and THC was associated with reduced cannabis withdrawal symptoms and decreased cannabis consumption among people with cannabis-using disorder. They called for more high-quality trials to clarify the therapeutic role of cannabis, particularly for those with limited alternative treatments.
