Detroit Democrat, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, has unveiled a plan to make more government documents available for disclosure and ban secret spending aimed at influencing elections in Michigan. The plan includes expanding the Freedom of Information Act and requiring voluntary compliance with disclosure requirements for her executive office if she becomes governor. Benson also plans to require all groups that spend money to influence elections to disclose the sources of all contributions they receive that go toward political spending. The proposal was unveiled during Sunshine Week, an annual national celebration of open government. Despite efforts by Republican politicians to expand these requirements in the past, House Speaker Matt Hall, R-Richland Township, has refused to take these bills up.
