Former Portage Mayor James Snyder has appealed his 3-year probation sentence on his conviction for obstructing the IRS. The former mayor was sentenced to 3 years probation and $78,111.57 in restitution. His appeal includes a motion for a new trial on the charge and challenges the denial of his motion for acquittal and a motion to file for a retrial. The judge stated that Snyder has already repaid $18,000 of his debt by monthly payments of $570 a month. This is part of a saga that began nearly 10 years ago when Snyder was indicted on one count of defrauding and two counts of bribery, one involving towing contracts and the other involving garbage trucks. The case was remanded to the lower courts.
