Writer Julia Davis started her first novel, The Last Sunday in May, about a father and daughter, when she was desperate to feel like she could feel like the old me, but writing felt like a lifeline during a busy season of life. Six years later, she was still revising her novel, but feared the inevitable rejections. Her dad was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a condition that is difficult to treat and often fatal, three months later, he had a series of strokes and died two days after my mom’s birthday, two months before he would have attended his 58th Indy 500 race. Davis struggled to write again after his father's death, but returned to writing after his death. She credits her efforts to keep a part of her father's love for his daughter and the lessons she learned in her own life.
