New York City's Rent Guidelines Board has voted to consider a potential rent freeze for roughly 1 million regulated apartments, potentially affecting more than 2 million tenants across the five boroughs. The decision aligns with a central campaign pledge from Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who called it a response to financial pressure on both tenants and property owners. The preliminary ranges marked one of the rare times the board considered freezing rents on one-year leases, the first time it considered a freeze on two-year ones. The board will hold public hearings before a final vote on the issue on June 25.
