Solar accounted for over 72% of US electrical generating capacity added in 2025, with another 16% from wind. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has released data, which indicates that solar has held the lead among all energy sources for 28 consecutive months. The commission expects solar to add another 86 gigawatts (GW) over the next three years, which will also surpass that of coal. Solar has been the largest source of new generating capacity addition each month for 28 months straight, with total utility-scale solar capacity growing from 91.82 GW to 164.53 GW. In 2025, wind and solar accounted for 88.4% of all new generation capacity, while natural gas added just 11.4%. The remaining capacity additions by all renewable energy sources over the remaining time in office would add just 335 MW, while coal is forecast to fall by 1,828 MW.
