The Canadian government has introduced Bill C-3, an Act to Amend the Citizenship Act, which went into effect on Dec. 15, 2025. This means that millions of Americans with parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents who were born in Canada may now qualify for Canadian citizenship by descent. This change comes after Canadian courts ruled parts of the Citizenship act relating to the first-generation limit to citizenship via descent as unconstitutional. However, due to the current processing times, it may take up to 10 months and 50 times for citizenship applications.
