Federal prosecutors in Manhattan are investigating bets on prediction markets that may have violated insider trading laws. The US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, led by former Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Jay Clayton, recently met with representatives from Polymarket about potentially lucrative bets on events such as the capture of Nicolás Maduro and missile strikes on Iran. Both the SEC and the US Attorney’s office have authority to investigate concerns about insider trading and market manipulation in all markets. The investigation marks a regulatory ramp up for an industry that has grown sharply without federal oversight. No companies have been accused of wrongdoing.
