The Senate is debating a stricter voter registration bill, the SAVE America Act, which critics argue would require more documentation to vote. The bill would require voters nationwide to provide proof of citizenship when they register and to show accepted voter identification when casting a ballot. It would also create new penalties for election workers who register voters without proof of eligibility. It also requires states to hand voter data over to the Department of Homeland Security, which can screen for voters who are in the country illegally. Critics argue that the bill would disenfranchise millions of voters, including Republicans, who argue that voter fraud is rare and never affecting the outcome of any contest. The Senate voted 51-48 to begin the debate, with Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski the only Republican voting against moving forward on the bill.
