Holy Week altars keep San Miguel de Allende natives connected in a gentrifying city

The Friday of Sorrows, or Viernes de Dolores, marks the beginning of Holy Week in San Miguel de Allende, a Catholic tradition that recalls the seven sorrows suffered by the Virgin Mary during the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ. The Friday of the Sorrow's is when families open their homes to visitors, offering them treats such as a glass of flavored water, a popsicle, an ice cream cone, a piece of candied chilacayote squash, or a delicious capirotada bread pudding. Despite this, rising housing costs, tourism and gentrification have displaced many San Miguel families from the downtown area. Francisco Mota, creator of the page Memoria San Miguel, shared the history, symbols and value of this celebration.
